Cranking is the consistent turning over of the engine for more than just a few second. Think back to when you've started your car in the past. The noise before the car actually starts is what you’re looking for.

Here are some other questions to ask yourself that may save some time. Were there any signs prior to this event? Hard starts, excessive cranking on prior attempts, needing to jump you car frequently. Does the RPM gauge move when cranking? It should. If it does not look into why. Are there any codes? If there are codes related to your fuel, air, spark, or security system (immobilizer), diagnose or look into those first. Does your security light turn on and then go off after a few seconds? It should. If it does not you need to figure out why.
