What Are the Three C’s?
The three C’s are a standard diagnostic procedure used to ensure the customer’s concern is correctly addressed. The steps are Concern, Cause, and Correction.
Concern
The first step is to verify the concern. If the vehicle has a no-start condition, verify that it will not start. If the customer reports a noise or hesitation while driving, drive the vehicle under the appropriate conditions to recreate the issue. If the concern cannot be identified, a general diagnostic may fail to address the actual problem, and the vehicle cannot be properly retested after the repair. If the concern involves a check engine light, the fault may need to be active to properly test the system using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
Cause
The cause involves evaluating the system in question as well as related systems. This is where the diagnostic process takes place.
If a check engine light is present, this may include examining live data or freeze-frame data to determine which parameter was out of specification when the engine control module triggered the light. Once the parameter is identified, a thorough technician investigates further. What caused the abnormal reading?
With suspension or drivability issues, the cause may simply be a worn component, but sometimes the problem is more complicated. For example, an alternator may fail due to age, but a valve cover leak that allows oil to contaminate the replacement alternator can cause the new part to fail in a similar way. In this case, the valve cover leak is an underlying cause that must be addressed, not just the failed alternator.
Correction
This step involves correcting the problem based on the diagnostic findings and root cause. Using the alternator example, a customer may receive a quote for both a valve cover gasket and an alternator. They may be advised that both repairs are necessary, or that one should be completed as soon as possible after the other if financial or other limitations prevent both repairs from being completed at once.
The correction is intended not only to fix the immediate problem but also to address the underlying cause and help prevent the issue from recurring.
How Muller Auto Uses the Three C’s
At Muller Auto, we believe proper automotive repair starts with understanding the customer’s concern rather than jumping straight to a replacement part. We verify the symptom, investigate the relevant systems, use appropriate diagnostic testing to identify the cause, and explain our findings before recommending a repair.
When multiple repairs are involved, we work to distinguish what is necessary to address the immediate concern from what may prevent future problems or address other issues discovered during the inspection.
Our goal is not simply to turn off a warning light or install a new component. It is to identify the problem accurately, perform the appropriate correction, and verify the result. The three C’s provide a simple framework for that process: Concern, Cause, and Correction.
