Can Mice Cause Your Car Not to Start? A Real Toyota RAV4 Diagnostic Case Study

Short answer: absolutely.

This week, we diagnosed a 2010 Toyota RAV4 that would not start. The customer had already replaced the key fob battery and even installed a starter, but the vehicle still would not crank.

This is a perfect example of why proper diagnostics matter and why fault codes do not automatically mean a part has failed.

Customer Complaint

The customer stated:

• Vehicle would not start.

• Dash lights came on normally.

• Starter would not click.

• Key fob battery had already been replaced.

• Starter had already been replaced.

At this point, it would be easy to start guessing. Many people would condemn another component or assume the new starter was defective.

Instead, we started with diagnostics.

Initial Scan and Code Retrieval

A full system scan revealed a P0705 – Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction.

The first question wasn’t, “Is the sensor bad?”

The first question was: What are the modules seeing?

Why Live Data Matters

Before touching a single tool, we pulled up live data. Within approximately three minutes, we had already learned:

• The push-button start system was receiving a start request.

• The security system was not preventing starting.

• The throttle position sensor was responding normally.

• Multiple modules were communicating properly.

• The starter relay was not being commanded on.

• The transmission range data never showed Park, Reverse, Neutral, or Drive.

This was a huge clue. The vehicle should always recognize one of its gear positions. Instead, it recognized none of them.

Even more interesting, the vehicle reacted differently when shifted into Neutral. The vehicle beeped when attempting to start in Neutral instead of remaining completely silent.

This told us something extremely important. The shifter knew it had been moved, but the transmission range sensor data did not.

At this point, we had narrowed our possibilities to:

• Failed transmission range sensor

• Cable adjustment issue

• Wiring problem

• Module issue

All of that information was gathered while sitting in the driver’s seat.

Efficiency Is Expertise

As technicians, efficiency matters. If I can eliminate most of a starting system in three minutes using live data instead of spending thirty minutes disassembling components unnecessarily, I should.

Customers are not paying for the amount of time it takes to reach an answer. They are paying for the experience that allows the answer to be reached accurately and efficiently.

I didn’t learn this process in thirty minutes. It took years of training, mistakes, and experience to be able to diagnose a problem this quickly.

Test, Don’t Guess

The next step was not replacing parts. The next step was testing.

We checked the related fuse first because it was easy to access and quickly ruled out a simple power supply issue.

Then we moved toward the transmission range sensor connector. That’s when we found the problem.

The Real Failure: Rodent Damage

The wiring at the transmission connector had been chewed by rodents. This was the second rodent-damaged vehicle we had diagnosed this week.

At that point, further testing stopped. Why? Because you cannot accurately test a system with broken wiring. Any additional tests could produce misleading results.

The wiring must be repaired first. Then the system can be retested.

Will Repairing the Wiring Fix the Car?

Maybe. Maybe not. This is where many customers become confused. 

Finding one failure does not automatically guarantee that there are no others. Professional diagnostics follow a simple rule. “Replace and retest.”

Right now, we know the wiring has failed. We know the rodent damage is a problem. We know it must be repaired.

Once the wiring is repaired, we can retest the system and verify whether any additional issues exist.

That is the proper diagnostic process.

Finding the Root Cause

A good technician doesn’t just find broken parts.

A good technician finds why they failed.

For example, An alternator covered in engine oil may need replacement, but the oil leak also needs to be repaired because it caused the failure.

In this case the failed component was the damaged wiring. The root cause was rodent damage. If the rodent issue isn’t addressed, another wiring failure may occur in the future.

Lessons for Customers

• A fault code does not automatically mean a part has failed.

• Throwing parts at a problem often costs more money.

• Professional diagnostics save time and money.

• Fast diagnostics come from years of experience.

Lessons for Young Technicians

• Use live data first.

• Gather information before touching the vehicle.

• Test, don’t guess.

• Find the known failure.

• Repair and retest.

• Never condemn a part without evidence.

The goal isn’t to be the fastest technician. The goal is to be the technician who reaches the correct answer efficiently and accurately.
