What A Bad Ground Strap Can Do To Your Car

When people search for car repair Fort Wayne, they're often looking for someone to replace the part they believe has failed. Sometimes they're right. Sometimes they're close. But one of the biggest mistakes made in automotive repair is allowing a symptom to become a diagnosis.

At Muller Auto, every repair recommendation begins with verification. That same philosophy applied during a recent no-start diagnosis on a 2013 Jeep Wrangler. In this case, what sounded exactly like a failed battery turned out to be something entirely different.

The Customer's Request

The customer contacted us because their 2013 Jeep Wrangler would not start. Their request was straightforward: Replace the battery.

If the battery didn't solve the problem, they wanted diagnostics afterward. It's a request we receive fairly often. As discussed in Why Good Technicians Verify Before They Replace, we always recommend diagnostics before replacing parts because symptoms rarely identify a failed component by themselves.

The customer chose to decline diagnostics, but that didn't change our responsibility to verify the repair before installing parts.

Verify the Concern

The starter produced a rapid clicking noise every time the key was turned. Most people immediately associate that sound with a weak battery. Sometimes that's exactly what it is. Sometimes it isn't. Using the scan tool, I monitored battery voltage while attempting to crank the engine. Battery voltage measured approximately 11.7 volts. More importantly, the voltage never dropped while the starter was clicking. That immediately changed my diagnostic plan.

A starter motor typically draws hundreds of amps while cranking an engine. If the starter is actually attempting to turn the engine, battery voltage should decrease under load. Since the voltage wasn't changing, I suspected the starter wasn't drawing current. That wasn't a diagnosis. It was simply the next theory to prove or disprove.

Continue Eliminating Possibilities

I monitored live PCM data and verified the starter command remained active the entire time the ignition key was held in the START position. The computer wasn't cycling the relay. The signal remained constant. The battery then passed its health test. Although it was approaching the end of its service life, it still met testing specifications. The customer was informed of its condition and chose to replace it after the diagnosis was complete. This is an important distinction. A battery can be old without being responsible for the customer's concern.

Don't Stop Testing

Power was present at the starter. The starter signal circuit was functioning correctly. Ground appeared to be present. The starter was removed and bench tested. It passed. To eliminate every possibility, I tested it using both the customer's battery and a new battery. It passed again.

Just because several components had tested good didn't mean the diagnosis was complete. It simply meant the failure was somewhere else. Never Overlook the Obvious

At this point I knew the battery passed, the PCM was commanding the starter, the relay was functioning, power reached the starter on both constant and signal, and the starter itself operated normally. Ground also appeared to be present, but something still didn't add up. 

Rather than diving deeper into wiring diagrams, I performed one simple test that took less than a minute. I connected a jumper cable directly from the battery's negative terminal to the engine block. The Jeep started immediately. Sometimes the simplest test answers the biggest question.

A Ground Isn't Always a Good Ground

Finding a ground is not the same as proving that ground can carry current. After bypassing the engine ground path, the resistance dropped to essentially zero and the Jeep started normally. Further inspection revealed the engine-to-frame ground strap was heavily corroded and partially torn. The engine wasn't missing ground. It had a ground that could not carry the load required by the starter motor. A circuit may appear complete during a simple continuity or resistance check, yet still fail under the high current demands of a real operating load.

The Correct Repair

The battery wasn't responsible for the no-start condition. However, testing showed it was nearing the end of its useful life. After discussing the results with the customer, they elected to replace the battery as preventative maintenance while also repairing the failed engine ground.

Those recommendations were based on two different reasons:

  • The ground strap caused the no-start.

  • The battery was simply aging.

Professional diagnostics separate those two decisions.

Diagnostics Don't Confirm Assumptions

This Jeep produced one of the most common symptoms associated with a weak battery. Had we installed the battery first simply because it was requested, the original problem would have remained.

Instead, systematic testing identified the actual failure before unnecessary parts were installed. That's what diagnostics are supposed to accomplish. Not proving yourself right. Not proving the customer wrong. Finding the root cause.

Symptoms often point technicians in the right direction, but they rarely identify a failed component by themselves. Describe what your vehicle is doing and allow the testing to determine why it's happening.

For Technicians

Don't confuse finding voltage, ground, or continuity with proving circuit integrity.
